Dr. Shafi is the Director of the Division of Kidney Diseases, Hypertension & Transplantation and Jerold B. Katz Investigator at Houston Methodist Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Dow Medical College, Pakistan, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Dr. Shafi completed a nephrology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and an MHS in Clinical Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He remained on faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 2008 to 2018. Before his current role, he served as the John D. Bower Director of Nephrology and Transplantation at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, USA, until 2022. An NIH-funded clinician-scientist, Dr. Shafi’s research focuses on cardiovascular risk and outcomes in advanced kidney disease. His research experience encompasses clinical research, biomarker studies, and population health.
