Shahbaj Ahmad
ISN Fellowship Abstract Award: 2nd Prize
ISN Fellowship Abstract Awards recognize the three top-scored WCN’24 abstracts submitted by recent ISN Fellows.
Dr. Shahbaj Ahmad is a transplant and interventional nephrologist at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun, India. He teaches and conducts workshops in interventional nephrology and collaborates with other nephrologists to advance the field.
Dr. Ahmad’s journey in interventional nephrology was arduous as no structured training was available in any of the centers in India. He initiated training in nephrology at Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, India, under the tutelage Dr. Mohan M. Rajapurkar (2023 ISN Pioneer Award winner for South Asia), who ignited his interest in interventional nephrology. At Servicio Autónomo Hospital Universitario Maracaibo in Venezuela, he trained in arteriovenous fistula (AVF) surgery and ultrasonography under the guidance of Dr. Octavio J. Salgado, Dr. Nemecio Teran, and Dr. Angela Vida. His dream of becoming a complete interventional nephrologist was completed at Singapore General Hospital, Singapore, under the mentorship of Dr. Tan Chieh Suai. He was trained in dialysis access salvage procedures like thrombolysis and angioplasty.
