ISN-KI Editorial Fellow

The ISN-KI Editorial Fellowship, designed for early career kidney care professionals, provides training opportunities for reviewing and critically evaluating manuscripts and managing editorial responsibilities within the context of a world-renowned nephrology journal. The Editorial Fellows will train alongside the Kidney International (KI) editorial team from October 2023-2025.

Dr. Muzamil Olamide Hassan is a Lecturer and Consultant Nephrologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical School and Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, and Honorary lecturer in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. His clinical and research interests include providing care for patients focusing on prevention and treatment of acute and chronic kidney disease and exploring the genetic component to cardiovascular and kidney health disparities in CKD patients of African ancestry. He adopted various molecular-based techniques to assess the role of circulating endotoxaemia as a pro-inflammatory mediator of atherosclerosis, and profiled APOL1 risk variants and inflammatory marker SNPs to explore the role genetics plays in contributing to the severity of atherosclerosis in CKD.

Currently, Dr. Hassan is Principal Investigator on an AREF funded Research Development Fellowship grant to validate differentially expressed microRNAs associated with kidney tubular dysfunction in Nigerian HIV Positive Patients. He is also Principal Investigator of a GSK Africa NCD Open Lab Grant funded project titled “Prevalence and Pharmacogenomics of Tenofovir Nephrotoxicity in HIV-Infected Adults in South-Western Nigeria.”

The ISN-KI Editorial Fellows will be acknowledged in the Editors’ Pick of ISN Journals: KI and KIR session taking place Saturday, April 1, 2023, 08:30-10:00 Bangkok time, in MR 110 ABC.
