SRC Sudan – Brazil
Emerging Center: Soba University Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan
Supporting Center: Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil
What difference did you make through your Sister Center partnership?
The partnership involved multiple visits by experts from Brazil to Sudan who carried out several hands-on teaching sessions and training activities in the areas of nephrology nursing, dialysis and transplantation, benefiting a large number of physicians and nursing providers across Sudan. Visits included nephrologists (Roberto Pecoits-Filho, Viviane Calice-Silva), a nurse (Ana Figueiredo) and a transplant immunologist (Cristina Glehn). Two Sudanese nephrology trainees are completing their advanced degrees (Master, PhD in Health Sciences) in Brazil. Furthermore, an HLA lab technician spent six months in Brazil and returned to assist establishing a new transplant center in Sudan. A curriculum for nephrology nursing diploma was put with the help of supporting center (Ana). A distinct achievement has been the collaboration of multiple nonprofits and healthcare institutions in Sudan to support the programs goals. Finally, there were extended training (fellowships), ISN mentorship program and research project opportunities (Salivary Urea Nitrogen point of care test projects) through the partnership between the supporting center and the Renal Research Institute.Ambitions include assisting Sudan to establish a renal registry for kidney diseases, continuation of research projects and furthering educational activities. Challenges include the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the political instability in Sudan and the geographic distance between the two countries. This year we have equipped the emerging center with tools and faster web connectivity, which will facilitate virtual educational activities.
