Claude Amiel Lecture
Professor Tamar Lotan is a co-founder of the marine biology department at the Leon Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa in Israel, where she served as department head from 2018 to 2022.
Professor Lotan’s main interests lie in marine biology, focusing on cnidaria (jellyfish, coral, sea anemones), one of the most ancient and colorful multicellular phyla dating back 700 million years. Her research spans marine field and lab work, combining molecular biology, multi-omics techniques, lab-on-chip technology, high-speed microscopic imaging, and drone and underwater imaging to study jellyfish aggregation, developmental plasticity, regenerative capability, evolution, and the mechanisms of ultra-fast cnidarian stinging capsules.
Professor Lotan has founded two biotech companies, one in healthcare and the other in drug delivery, leveraging the cnidarian stinging mechanism for human healthcare.
Professor Layton is giving the Claude Amiel Lecture in WCN Plenary Session 3 on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 11:50-12:30 p.m. India Standard Time in Auditorium Brahmkamal Hall. She will give the talk, ‘Environmental Stressors and Adaptation Mechanisms: From Marine Organism to (Kidney) Health Care.’
