Takashi Kadowaki
Diabetes and Adipocytokines
Dr. Takashi Kadowaki is the president of Toranomon Hospital in Tokyo, Japan. He is the
immediate past professor of diabetes and metabolic diseases at the University of Tokyo. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. His laboratory co-discovered the insulin-sensitizing action of adiponectin (AdipoR) and identified the receptor for AdipoR, which plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes linked to obesity.
Dr. Kadowaki has received many prestigious awards, including the Japan Academy Prize (2013), the Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research (2015), and the Claude Bernard Award from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (2020).
He is on the editorial board of Cell Metabolism and Molecular Metabolism. He served as the chairman of the board of directors of the Japan Diabetes Society and the Japan Society for the Study of Obesity. Dr. Kadowaki is currently president of the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences.
