Dr. Marina Vivarelli has been the chief of the Laboratory of Nephrology and chief of the Clinical Trial Center of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital, in Rome, Italy, since 2023. She trained in pediatrics at the University of Pavia, Italy, working in pediatric rheumatology in Dr. Fabrizio De Benedetti’s lab on the pathogenesis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis. She completed a research fellowship at Boston’s Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with Professor Raif Geha for 2 years.

Since 2006, in the Division of Nephrology of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Vivarelli has worked to establish a new front of translational research in pediatric immune-mediated renal diseases. Her focus has been on nephrotic syndrome and on complement-mediated renal disease. She has designed and conducted a phase 1 trial on the use of mesenchymal stem cells in difficult forms of nephrotic syndrome and has contributed to design and conduct trials evaluating the use of belimumab and comparing rituximab and mycophenolate mofetil in pediatric nephrotic syndrome.

Dr. Vivarelli has served on the European Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ESPN) council and is a Fellow of the ESPN. She has chaired the European Rare Kidney disease Network (ERKNet) Working Group on immune-mediated glomerulopathies and now chairs the Working Group on Thrombotic Microangiopathies and is a steering committee member of the ERKNet Registry. She has participated in or coordinated the preparation of IPNA or ERKNet guidelines on steroid-resistant and steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome, congenital nephrotic syndrome, IgA nephropathy, and IgA vasculitis with nephritis. She is on the editorial board of Pediatric Nephrology, Kidney International, and Journal of American Society of Nephrology.
