ISN-KI Editorial Fellows are early–career professionals and academics working in the field of nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation, who work and learn with the Kidney International® editorial team for two years.
Dr. Gabriel Cara Fuentes is an assistant professor of pediatric nephrology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and a physician-scientist and principal investigator at the Kidney and Urinary Tract Research Center in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute, also at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Cara Fuentes was born and raised in Spain. He earned his medical degree at the University of Granada in Granada, Spain. He then completed training in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology at Hospital Torrecárdenas in Almeria, Spain, and Hospital La Paz in Madrid, Spain, respectively. He also earned a doctoral degree at the University Alfonso X in Madrid. He subsequently completed training in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, USA.
Dr. Cara Fuentes’ research program is focused on the discovery and development of novel biomarkers and therapeutics for idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. His research is currently funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH-NIDDK) and by philanthropy and is enriched by several collaborations with researchers across the world. He is an author on more than 30 peer reviewer publications and several book chapters.
In addition to his research endeavors, Dr. Cara Fuentes practices clinical nephrology with a particular focus on childhood glomerular diseases (nephrotic syndrome, minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, Ig A nephropathy, etc.).
