Anita Layton
Mathematical Modelling of Diseases, Focus on Kidney Disease
Professor Anita Layton is the Canada 150 research chair in mathematical biology and medicine and professor of applied mathematics, computer science, pharmacy, and biology at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
Her research focuses on the development and application of mathematical models to gain insights into human and mammalian physiology and pathophysiology. In particular, she is interested in the effects of sex and circadian rhythms on kidney function, kidney disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Professor Layton is the editor of the SIAM Review Book Section, an associate editor of the SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Frontiers in Physiology, and Maple Transactions, and an AI/machine learning section editor for Hypertension.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canada Mathematical Society, and the Association of Women in Mathematics. She has received several prestigious awards, including the Canadian Mathematical Society’s Krieger–Nelson Prize in 2021, the Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada in 2021, the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals’ Award of Merit in 2023, and the Royal Society of Canada’s John L. Synge Award in 2023.
