SRC supports interventional nephrology workshop in Nigeria
Several ISN Sister Renal Centers (SRCs) from across Africa joined forces recently to set up an interventional nephrology training workshop in Nigeria, specifically focusing on vascular access and peritoneal dialysis.
The workshop was valuable opportunity for interaction and networking, clinical training and collaboration in research.
It was the first time that renal sister centers from Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt collaborated to design a course tailored to the needs of doctors in Nigeria.
The course brought together speakers from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto (Nigeria) the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and University of Edmonton (Canada).
Zaghloul Gouda, from Damanhour Medical National Institute in Egypt, led the practical sessions on tunneled catheter insertions for patients with end-stage kidney disease. He also demonstrated how to use an ultrasound for mapping the vessels in patients on dialysis treatment.
Adding to the hands-on learning sessions, there were also presentations and discussions on setting up and making use of peritoneal dialysis and improving the quality of nephrology research.
The workshop was well attended by nephrologists, trainees, nurses and vascular surgeons from various centers across northern Nigeria, including Sokoto, Maiduguri, Gombe, Minna, Kebbi and Zamfara.
