The ISN and AFRAN strengthen ties to advance kidney care in Africa and beyond

The ISN and the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) signed a new agreement at WCN’25 to strengthen collaborative efforts aimed at:

  • Improving the number of nephrologists in Africa
  • Supporting sustainable kidney care
  • Improving patient outcomes regionally and globally
AFRAN President Hany Hafez (seated, far left), ISN Immediate Past President Masaomi Nangaku (seated, second from right), and ISN Core Programs Committee Chair Tushar Vachharajani (seated, far right) sign a new agreement to advance nephrology training in Africa

With a shared commitment to combat the burden of kidney disease, this partnership expands fellowship training opportunities for young doctors across the continent. Under the new framework, the ISN will continue to fund the first year of training for successful fellowship applicants, while AFRAN will raise funds to support the second year, ensuring fellows in Africa are fully qualified to advance kidney care locally.

The ISN Fellowship Program celebrates four decades of impact, having trained over 800 Fellows from more than 100 low-resource countries.
