ISN Journal summaries on BK polyomavirus infection and the nurse’s role in managing symptoms of dialysis recipients
Insights from the BKEVER trial comparing everolimus versus mycophenolate mofetil for BK polyomavirus infection in kidney transplant recipients
The BKEVER trial compared everolimus (EVR) with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in kidney transplant recipients with BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) infection to assess which strategy led to faster viral clearance.
Results showed that reducing MMF was more effective, with 81.3% of patients clearing the virus in six months compared to 55.7% in the EVR group.
The study concludes that switching to EVR does not improve BKPyV clearance and highlights the need for alternative treatment strategies.
Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes workshop on the nurse’s role in managing the symptoms of people receiving dialysis
Nephrology nurses play a key role in managing the high symptom burden experienced by people receiving dialysis, including fatigue, pain, itch, and sleep disturbances, which can significantly impact quality of life.
A KDIGO workshop in December 2023 explored barriers to symptom assessment and strategies for improving symptom management in dialysis care.
Standardizing symptom management by nurses could help reduce treatment burden, enhance symptom control, and improve patients’ daily functioning and well-being.
