A Sub-study of the POISE-3 Randomized Trial Examined Effects of a Perioperative Hypotension-avoidance Strategy Versus a Hypertension-avoidance Strategy on the Risk of Acute Kidney Injury

This sub-study of the POISE-3 trial investigated whether a strategy to prevent low blood pressure during surgery could reduce the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI).

Researchers randomized 7,307 patients to either a hypotension-avoidance strategy or usual care and compared outcomes.

The study found no significant difference in AKI risk between the two groups, highlighting the ongoing challenge of preventing kidney injury during surgery.

In Defense of Age-based Estimated GFR Thresholds to Define CKD

This editorial advocates for age-specific glomerular filtration rate (GFR) thresholds to define chronic kidney disease (CKD), arguing that the current universal threshold of 60 ml/min per 1.73 m² is inappropriate as it may under-identify CKD in younger adults and over-diagnose it in the elderly when GFR naturally declines with age.

The authors suggest age-adapted thresholds for a more accurate and personalized approach to CKD diagnosis.
