Connecting Global Resources for CKDu: The ISN’s Commitment to Advancing Kidney Health Through Research
The ISN recognizes the importance of global research initiatives in advancing its mission for equitable kidney health worldwide. To this end, it has convened several global consortia or networks to address different facets of research, including the rapidly evolving challenge of chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu).
The ISN i3C (CKDu) Network (International Consortium CKDu Collaborators) unites kidney health professionals across 9 ISN regions. With 91 studies featured on the ISN Observatory of CKDu, the network aims to improve global understanding of CKDu and consolidate resources and insights.

In September, over 40 members of this network gathered online to share progress on research projects and discuss emerging strategies for tackling shared challenges in CKDu research. As new hotspots are identified almost daily, it is crucial to update understanding and approaches to CKDu continually.
During the session, three key studies on CKDu were presented: two in rural communities in Eastern India and one examining urban and rural CKDu cases in other regions. The ISN-GKHA also shared findings from a multinational CKDu study, providing a broader international perspective.
A key topic of discussion was the need for clearer terminology to describe CKDu subtypes. Participants proposed a multidimensional approach that could differentiate between various CKDu forms within a cohesive framework, potentially advancing both clinical understanding and patient care. By providing a platform for such discussions, the ISN i3C Network facilitates the development of shared language and frameworks that enhance CKDu knowledge and positively impact patient care.
