Long-term Impact of Immediate Versus Deferred Antiretroviral Therapy on Kidney Health in People With HIV

The long-term impact of prolonged antiretroviral therapy (ART) exposure on chronic kidney disease is unknown.

To investigate this, the Strategic Timing of Antiretroviral Treatment trial randomized 4,684 ART-naïve adults with CD4 cell count under 500 cells/mm3 to immediate versus deferred ART.

The results suggest no significant difference in long-term kidney health between the immediate and deferred ART groups, thereby supporting the long-term safety of early ART initiation.

Enhancing Disaster Preparedness in Peritoneal Dialysis Care

The 2023 twin earthquakes in southern Turkey highlighted the need for disaster preparedness, particularly for vulnerable populations such as patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD).

The authors conducted a retrospective multi-center investigation to assess the post-earthquake experiences of PD survivors, using an extensive anonymized online questionnaire and direct communication with healthcare providers in the affected regions.

The study reveals the resilience of PD patients in maintaining clinical stability despite challenges and highlights the importance of tailored disaster response protocols and improved infection control measures.
