ISN Mentee Investigates Effectiveness of Retraining Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis Procedures
Thanh Van Nguyen (Vietnam) has enjoyed mentorship from Lily Mushahar (Malaysia) since November 2021.
Find out more about the ISN Mentorship Program and apply here to be a mentee by July 1.
Dr. Nguyen’s goal as a dialysis physician was to deepen her knowledge of nephrology, especially renal replacement therapy.
Once the pair had agreed on objectives, Dr. Nguyen drafted a proposal to investigate the effectiveness of retraining peritoneal dialysis (PD) programs on patient outcomes. Dr. Lily provided many valuable comments to improve the quality of her proposal, which Dr. Nguyen then submitted to the ISN Clinical Research Program. The program accepted her proposal, “REtraining Program and PD Infections: RCT Study” (REPAIR).
Dr. Lily also shared information on educational materials and workshops during the collaboration, including the Young Nephrologists Committee and International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis webinars, and supported Dr. Nguyen’s attendance at a clinical research workshop at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban, Malaysia.
Since starting a new role in a clinical research unit specializing in infectious diseases, Dr. Nguyen is preparing a presentation on managing dengue infection in hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients with assistance from Dr. Lily.
The guidance from Dr. Lily motivated Dr. Nguyen to draft and submit a manuscript to the International Urology and Nephrology journal and an abstract to WCN’23, which was accepted.
Dr. Mushahar comments, “Dr. Van is an enthusiastic mentee with bright ideas!”
