ISN Joins Stakeholder Consultation on the Development of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact

Professor Ifeoma Ulasi, University of Nigeria, ISN Advocacy Working Group member, and Paul Laffin, ISN Advocacy Director, participated in the WHO Stakeholder Consultation on the Development of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact on October 14, 2020.

The WHO Global Diabetes Compact, to be launched in April 2021, builds on the Global Hearts Initiative to focus on:

  • Implementing policy measures to reduce diabetes risk factors;
  • assisting countries to improve access to diagnosis and treatment of diabetes; and
  • advancing the 2019 WHO pilot program, Prequalification of Human Insulin.

Kidney diseases are intricately linked to diabetes as both a cause and a consequence. Therefore, it is fundamental to include kidney disease in the Sustainable Development Goals agenda and deliver integrated health strategies to tackle its significant contribution to premature mortality from NCDs.

Speaking after the event, Professor Ulasi stated that such goals “Can be achieved only if people living with diabetes, civil society, governments, academia, and non-governmental organizations work together toward a holistic approach to NCD prevention and care [which] is why the ISN strongly welcomes the opportunity that its members have had in joining the WHO Stakeholder Consultation.”
