Saving Young Lives – spreading hope and positivity!
Over 30 doctors from different countries in Africa recently gathered in Cape Town to attend the Renal Skills Workshop organized by Professor Mignon McCulloch, from February 19 and 23, 2018 at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
Less than a week after the course, thanks to skills acquired during the peritoneal dialysis (PD) insertion workshop, one of the Namibian delegates, Dr Lona Mwenda, placed a PD catheter, treating a 30-day-old neonate patient.
This course gave medical professionals in countries such as Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia the chance to access new PD skills and knowledge. And, it gave us the hope to reach out more for countries in the future.
During this time, while doctors were focusing on PD in Cape Town, colleagues in Dakar were talking about acute kidney injury (AKI). The Senegalese Society of Nephrology organized a congress focusing on AKI, highlighting the importance of prevention in sub-Saharan countries. The society also arranged a teaching course on pediatric nephrology with the help of former ISN Fellow Dr Keita.
If what happened in Cape Town and Dakar brought positive results and generated other successes and fruitful interactions, this is definitively the beginning of a long lasting virtuous circle!
