Kazakh doctor gets ISN Pioneer award for NIS and Russia region
Congratulations to Dr. Assiya Kanatbayeva from the Kazakh National Medical University. She received an ISN Pioneer award at the recent ISN Regional Board meeting in Tbilisi, Georgia at the end of October.
From almost nothing Dr. Kanatbayeva developed a wide net of nephrology care in her country, educated and trained many students, and is recognized not only in Kazakhstan, but also in all states of the region.
After graduating from medical school in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1964, she
defended her PhD thesis and Postdoc dissertation on Ig-A nephropathy at the Moscow Research Institute of Pediatrics. Continuing her clinical, educational and academic activity in Kazakhstan, Kanatbayeva is a recognized there as a founder and leader of nephrology.
Since early the 1970s, she worked hard to develop the care for adults and children with kidney disease. As chief of the nephrology department at Kazakh National Medical University, she was and still is a teacher and advisor for almost all Kazakh nephrologists.
In 2005 Dr. Kanatbayeva set up the Kazakhstan Nephrology Association, and for eight years remained its president. She initiated international seminars and renal days in Kazakhstan, which are now conducted every other year. As a founder and main organizer of the Nephro-school in Almaty, she gives monthly case presentation workshops for students, residents and practitioners.
