WHO announces new Director General
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been appointed as World Health Organization (WHO) Director General after receiving a clear majority of the votes from WHO Member States. He will take office on July 1st, 2017.
Upon hearing the news, ISN President David Harris stated: ‘I strongly welcome the new Director General and I look forward to a step up in the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including kidney disease. There is a need to make NCDs a priority issue for WHO and governments going forward, particularly in the lead up to the 2018 United Nations High Level Meeting on NCDs’.
ISN also fully supports the new Director General’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage and calls for the implementation of an integrated approach to NCD prevention and control including that of kidney disease.
