ISN DICG at Vatican City Summit on organ trafficking and transplant tourism
I had the privilege of attending the Summit of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism in Vatican City, which was held in Vatican City on February 7 and 8, 2017.
As a Society, ISN was present in multiple capacities. I was joined by ISN Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group (DICG) members John Gill and Somchai Eiam-Ong as well as other ISN members representing their regional and local constituencies. For the full list of attendants, CLICK HERE.
We were also accompanied by representatives from the United Nations, the World health Organization (WHO) as well as human rights lawyers, advocacy groups, justice and ministry representatives, members of the Vatican and the media.

The statement will guide specific jurisdictions to develop concrete plans to combat organ trafficking, through an integrated approach. This would include identifying and preventing efforts to delay the progression of organ failure (kidney disease specifically)and obviate the need for renal replacement therapy; equitable, sustainable access to renal replacement therapy, including the promotion of transplantation, and increased efforts to support deceased and living donation according to ethical standards.
