ISN steps up in the fight against AKI
Since the launch of the 0by25 initiative in 2013, ISN is now focusing on gathering evidence, building awareness and taking action.
ISN strongly believes that it is possible to overcome the burden of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) by deploying need-driven and evidence-based solutions to patients, healthcare professionals, the private sector as well as governments and decision-makers. Support from the global healthcare community is key to making the 0by25 initiative a success.
One of the initial aims of ISN is to collect new data as a first major step to building a strong case for action on AKI globally.
The 0by25 Project Team, led by Dr. Ravindra Mehta, is now developing a system of AKI measurements to consistently collect data and better assess the progress in reducing the burden of AKI. ISN also hopes to establish AKI as an identified outcome in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD).
ISN launched the “Global Snapshot”in 2014. This global cross-sectional study was designed to better understand the growing burden of AKI. This is the first time that ISN has carried out a web-based, prospective data collection exercise, simultaneously in hundreds of centers worldwide to address the information gap on AKI. The Global Snapshot has provided new data on how AKI is managed and treated globally and the findings will be published by the end of 2015.
With stronger evidence on the burden of AKI, ISN is now also working to raise AKI awareness across the global healthcare community, including among healthcare professionals, patients and, more widely, governments and public health institutions and the private sector.
ISN is therefore currently mapping its existing AKI education and awareness raising tools aimed at patients, healthcare professionals and governments. It aims to identify the best available educational tools which can be adapted for use in every region in the world.
So finally, it is time to take action.The third stream of 0by25 activities is directed towards establishing a sustainable infrastructure for prevention, education and training, detection and management of AKI, which can be deployed and implemented according to local needs and resources.
ISN is therefore developing a series of interventions under a common Pilot Project framework which will be implemented in selected centers in different regions (Asia, Africa, South America). The interventions cover the ‘5Rs’ of AKI: risk assessment and risk reduction, recognition, response, renal support and rehabilitation.
The first pilot interventions will be launched in the course of 2016.
0by25 is an ISN human rights initiative, which calls for globally-applicable strategies that permit timely diagnosis and treatment of AKI for patients with potentially reversible diseases. Its overarching goal is to achieve zero preventable deaths from AKI by 2025. CLICK HERE to find out more.
