World Kidney Day: ready, steady, go!

Today is World Kidney Day (WKD), a joint initiative between ISN and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) – raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.

Many of you are already doing so much. The WKD map is filling up with lots of events from every corner of the world. If you haven’t done so yet, make sure to add your event and let us know how you are celebrating World Kidney Day or find out what is happening near you, CLICK HERE.

This year World Kidney Day focuses on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in aging populations. The prevalence of CKD is higher in elderly people. “The older you get the more likely you are to have some form of kidney disease,” says John Feehally, ISN Programs Chair. “It is also a major risk multiplier in patients with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke. All of which are key causes of disability and death in older people,” he adds.

Every year our supporters get more creative in finding ways to engage people and raise awareness on this important cause. This year is no exception. Marathons, walkathons, street demonstrations, free screenings, charity dinners, lectures and cooking competitions are taking place worldwide.

We want to thank everyone for making this day so special. Get involved and visit www.worldkidneyday.org.
