ISN President says ‘Early screening the key to combat kidney diseases’
ISN President Giuseppe Remuzzi recently spoke to the Hindu Times during a screening camp conducted by the TANKER Foundation.
Remuzzi who inaugurated this event, was quoted as saying that it is “vital to screen and detect kidney disease early, as with medical intervention, it could be prevented from progressing.”
Around 500 million people around the world have some form of kidney disease and around half of them do not even know they have it. For this initiative, the The Tamilnad Kidney Research Foundation (TANKER) Foundation also sent out 10,000 text messages to members of the public urging them to go to a doctor if they were diabetic or had high blood pressure.
The TANKER Foundation is a non-profit charitable trust founded by Prof. Georgi Abraham and like-minded people in June 1993. It provides subsidized dialysis and financial assistance for the underprivileged with kidney disease. The Foundation also sets up awareness and prevention programs. Until now, more than 560 awareness programs have taken place in schools and in renal and urban communities involving more than 96,000 beneficiaries.
