Clinical Presentation, Pathological Spectrum, and Outcomes of Alcoholic Cirrhosis-related Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy

Researchers in France investigated the clinical presentation and outcomes of patients with cirrhosis-related IgA nephropathy (cirrhosis-IgAN) compared to primary IgA nephropathy (pIgAN).

The authors found that while acute kidney injury in cirrhosis-IgAN is often due to extrinsic causes, it can also be attributed to IgA-dominant membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis.

Steroid use was associated with increased mortality and infectious disease risk in these patients, suggesting a need for further research on the role of immunosuppressive therapy in cirrhosis-IgAN management.
