Kazakhstan's National Congress Honors Young Nephrologists
Despite COVID-19-related restrictions, the Kazakhstan Society of Nephrologists, Dialysis, and Transplant Physicians held its 5th Annual National Congress from November 20-21, 2021, in hybrid mode, in Nur-Sultan city, the capital of Kazakhstan. The event was endorsed by the ISN and the European Renal Association. |

To encourage future generations of kidney care providers, the meeting hosts an annual event to recognize the best abstracts of the year from young nephrologists within the ISN NIS & Russia region. The winners were presented with their awards in the last session of the congress. This is the fourth consecutive year that the competition has been held.

Results of the Prospective Multicenter SoLKID Cohort Study Indicate Bio-psycho-social Outcome Risks to Kidney Donors 12 Months after Donation
The Safety of the Living Kidney Donor (SoLKiD) cohort study analyzed pre-donation and two-, six- and 12-months post-donation data from donors in 20 German transplantation centers.

| The study demonstrates that a significant number of donors developed clinically relevant changes in physical and mental health, notably decreased kidney function and increased fatigue, highlighting the urgent need to inform potential donors of these risks.
|

A Multicenter Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial to Assess the Impact of Incremental Versus Conventional Initiation of Hemodialysis on Residual Kidney Function
|
|
|
To investigate the reported benefits of twice-weekly hemodialysis, including preservation of residual kidney function (RKF), the authors initiated a randomized controlled feasibility trial examining incident hemodialysis patients with urea clearance of 3 ml/min/1.73 m2 or more.
|
|
Findings demonstrate less frequent serious adverse events in incremental patients and significantly lower costs compared to standard hemodialysis, suggesting that incremental hemodialysis is safe and cost-saving in incident patients with adequate RKF, justifying a definitive trial.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Identifies Significant Global Inequities in Hemodialysis care in Low and Lower- Middle Income Countries - an ISN/DOPPs Survey
To ascertain the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients, especially in low and lower-middle income (LLMIC) settings, and identify global inequities in HD practice and access, the ISN and the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study(DOPPS) conducted a global online-survey of hemodialysis (HD) units for six months in 2020.
|
|
|
Striking global inequities were identified in the care of chronic HD patients during the pandemic, disproportionately affecting LLMICs. The authors call for urgent action to address these inequities, exacerbating pre-existing vulnerabilities.
|
|
|
|
Kidney Health for All - Efforts in Low-Income Settings to Enhance Community Engagement, Kidney Health Awareness, and Screening
The authors present reasons leading to poor kidney disease management in low-income settings. They outline existing programs and initiatives by international kidney health organizations, including the ISN, to address this lack, and propose increased engagement with the public to improve CKD screening.

Recent and ongoing awareness-raising campaigns within Ghana are outlined, notably through the Kidney Health International organization founded by former ISN Fellow and Emerging Leader program participant, Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, after his training in South Africa.
