How did the ISN support enable you to advance kidney health in your home country?
The ISN Fellowship program has given me recognition as a renal physician and hence a platform to better advocate for patients with kidney disease. The training has improved my knowledge and skills. I am now able to offer better care for patients on dialysis and those post kidney transplant. Currently, I work in the second largest hospital in the country as a renal physician. We have established a well functioning acute hemodialysis service. The program also enabled me to form a network of friends and colleagues who provide guidance and support when needed.
What does the future look like?
The future for renal medicine in Fiji looks bright with the proposed government subsidized chronic hemodialysis plans and the development of a National Kidney Research and Treatment Center. We have more prospects for research with the development of a renal registry. Maybe one day, we will be able to do kidney transplants in Fiji as well.
