Kidney International Publishes the KDIGO 2021 Guideline for Glomerular Disease Management
The guideline was developed to assist clinicians caring for patients with glomerulonephritis while being mindful of implications for policy and cost.
|
|

Kidney International also presents an executive summary of the guideline in their October issue.
|
|
The guideline provides practical, evidence-based recommendations and useful infographics based on input from relevant experts to guide diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and special situations. It also offers research recommendations for areas where there are gaps in knowledge.

Latin America Region and spotlights the Panamanian Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (SPNH). |

We spoke to SPNH President Karen Courville about ongoing local initiatives to raise kidney health awareness in the region.
|
|
The SPNH is currently developing strong campaigns to raise awareness of two important pathologies that cause chronic kidney disease: hypertension and diabetes. A series of bi-weekly webinars will be broadcast from October onwards, focusing on the importance of addressing hypertension in various contexts, including in diabetic, CKD, and transplant patients.

The Sister Transplant Centers (STC) Program, a joint initiative of the ISN and The Transplantation Society (TTS), fosters global partnerships between health centers to improve treatment and outcomes for kidney transplant patients in low-resource settings.

A sister center partnership set up in 2013 between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Fundanier helped implement a deceased donor program and comprehensive pediatric nephrology care for children in Guatemala. Read more on the success of this collaboration here.

The ELP showed me how everyone has a role to play in improving the standard of kidney care, not only in their own country but also worldwide.”

Introducing the Second Detlef Schlöndorff ISN Fellow
Ahmad Naseer Kaihan has become the second Detlef Schlöndorff ISN Fellowship recipient. His training is supported by the Detlef Schlöndorff Fellowship Fund.
|
|
Ahmad Naseer Kaihan will travel from his home center, the Payem Sehat Hospital in Afghanistan, to the MGM Healthcare center in India. He will spend 12 months training in clinical nephrology under supervision from Georgi Abraham and then return to his home region to help improve kidney care using skills gained during his fellowship.
|
|

Narrative storytelling is a great way to explain complex topics to make them more accessible. Using a fictional clinical discussion, the third chapter of the Narrative Based Clinical Trials (ISN-ACT) Toolkit will outline what it takes to become a trial site: A group of nephrologists aiming to become a trial site share their experiences as they confront various issues and overcome the challenges involved.

The ISN will shortly accept abstracts to the ISN Frontiers Meeting, ‘Complement-related kidney diseases: classification, genetics, and treatment’ on these topics.

Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters at the meeting and published in Kidney International Reports. A selection of authors will
present their abstracts orally.

A Day in the Life of a Resident on a Nephrology Ward in Mexico
My name is Alexia Romero, and I am a nephrology resident at the Hospital Civil of Guadalajara, a 1,200-bed tertiary care center in Mexico.
|
|
At the start of a new day in the nephrology ward, alongside two resident fellows and two undergraduate interns, I know it's going to be a busy day.
|
|
I am responsible for approximately sixty patients with chronic kidney disease. My first activity of the day is to assess each patient on the ward. We review laboratory and imaging tests and discuss and modify treatment accordingly, focusing on vital signs, urine output, and fluid balance.
|

An international survey has been developed to help design exercise guidelines for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients.
|

Access the survey in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or Thai.
|

The survey on exercise and physical activity practices and perceptions among PD clinicians is supported by the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis and approved by the University of South Australia Human Research Ethics Committee.
|
|
The survey comprises 13 questions and takes approximately 8 minutes to complete.
