Kidney disease in disadvantaged populations: still a Herculean challenge
The Proceedings of the 8th Conference on Kidney Disease in Disadvantaged Populations presents papers given at the WCN 2011 Satellite Symposium “Disparities in Renal Disease-Moving Towards Solutions,” the eighth symposium organized by the International Society of Nephrology – Global Outreach Committee on Kidney Health in Disadvantaged Populations (ISN-GO CKHDP), held in Victoria on Vancouver Island immediately following the biennial ISN World Congress of Nephrology in Vancouver in April 2011.
The material covers a wide range of nephrological topics, including papers on clinical, epidemiological and anthropological aspects of kidney disease as it affects disadvantaged populations. In recent years more attention has been paid to this area, with an increasing number of trained doctors and nurses in many, though not all, developing nations. The numbers attending these symposia have also increased as have the number of abstracts submitted for presentation as posters. These Proceedings also contain short papers developed from prize winning abstracts. Even so, there remains an uncomfortable feeling that in many parts of the developing world there are glaring deficiencies in the identification and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
