ISN joins Brazilian Society of Nephrology at the Congresso Pauliste de Nefrologia
The XVII Congresso Paulista de Nefrologia was recently hosted in Atibaia, Brazil. The meeting is the annual meeting of Sociedado de Nefrologia do Estado de Sao Paulo (SONESP), a major meeting for the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (BSN), and includes physicians, nurses, dieticians and other allied health professionals.
The opening ceremonies included a formal presentation and introduction of ISN to a large number of the membership of BSN, and the local leadership of SONESP and BSN. The formal part of the evening was followed by an energetic ‘Carnival’ performance and lively dancing by all.
Scientific presentations by ISN President-Elect Adeera Levin and ISN Education and Publication Chair David Harris were simultaneously translated, and the question and answer period was smoothly conducted with reverse translation. The entire meeting was of high professional and intellectual quality, celebrating and sharing the successes of BSN.
In addition, a unique session was arranged with officials from the Ministry of Health, as they propose the lay out of a new integrated system of care for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, which builds on the principles of chronic disease models and prevention.
Following the formal session, a private discussion was organized with BSN leadership, David Harris and Adeera Levin and José Eduardo Fogolin who is coordinator of high complexity healthcare at the Ministry of Health in Brazil. Sharing ideas, comments and clarifying some assumptions over a period of one hour was enlightening for all.
It was a very productive discussion about ways to increase Brazilian involvement in ISN activities, and how to integrate a public policy/CKD and AKI advocacy session into next year’s BSN meeting. The leaders were enthusiastic, interested and committed to working closely with ISN to develop specific activities, such as involvement in Research and Prevention projects, Educational Ambassador visits, Sister Renal Center partnerships and Fellowships.
