In August 2021, the Renal Association of Mauritius announced on social media that the Mauritian Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) had recognized nephrology as a separate specialty from internal medicine in Mauritian hospitals. This momentous decision was initiated in response to the dedicated work of many stakeholders over several decades and the Renal Association's awareness-raising activities. |

Introducing the First ISN Ravi Mehta AKI Fellow
The ISN is pleased to announce the first ISN Ravi Mehta AKI Fellowship recipient, Nurul Zaynah Nordin.
|
|
Nurul Nordin, from Kuala Lumpur Hospital in Malaysia, will spend 12 months training in critical care nephrology under the supervision of Dr. Marlies Ostermann at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in the UK. After training, Dr. Nordin will return to Malaysia to use and share the skills developed during her fellowship.

Dr. Nordin's training is supported by the Ravi Mehta AKI Fellowship Fund, which helps fund one fellow per year in the field of Acute Kidney Injury.

Provide Your Input: Complete a Survey on Fluid Management Practices in Kidney Replacement Therapy Patients
Fluid removal is a principal component of the kidney replacement therapy (KRT) prescription. However, there is a lack of high-quality evidence to guide fluid balance management in this context.
|
|
The Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), Montreal, Canada, is conducting a survey to learn more about the attitudes and practice patterns of intensivists and nephrologists in the management of fluid balance among critically ill patients with acute kidney injury who are receiving KRT. The Health Research Ethics Board at the CHUM has approved this survey.

Are you an ISN member with a kidney-care story to tell? You can help raise awareness of the challenges of living with kidney disease by transforming your experience into a narrative of seven minutes or less and submitting it to the ISN Community Film Event for the chance to share it with the global ISN community.

Shortlisted films will be screened at WCN’22 and compete for the Best Film Award 2022. An additional award, the “WKD 2022 Best Film Award,” will go to the film that receives the most votes during World Kidney Day 2022.

ISN President Chairs Session at 16th International Symposium on IgA Nephropathy
The 16th International Symposium on IgA Nephropathy will take place virtually from September 21-23, 2021.

ISN President, Agnes Fogo, will chair Plenary Session 10, ‘IgAN: A Global Perspective’ on September 23, 2021, from 11:10-11:55 a.m. CEST.
|
|
The symposium will focus on pathogenesis, pathology, and treatment of IgA nephropathy. The program highlights the current discussion on pathogenetic mechanisms of IgA nephropathy in ongoing randomized controlled trials. In addition to lectures and satellite symposia, there will be live poster sessions and free communication sessions.

|
|
|

First International Home Dialysis Roundtable Meeting Leads to Action Agenda on Home Dialysis
Globally, 10.5 million people have advanced kidney disease, and the number is growing by 5-7% annually. Access to life-saving treatments such as kidney transplants and dialysis, however, is far from universal.
|
|
Patients dependent on dialysis are more commonly treated in a clinic with in-center hemodialysis (HD) rather than through home HD (HHD) or peritoneal dialysis despite HHD providing significant economic, quality-of-life, and clinical advantages, especially in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
|
|
To address this discrepancy, kidney care organizations from around the world formed an International Home Dialysis Roundtable (IHDR supported by Baxter Healthcare). They drafted an action plan making recommendations in four key areas to promote home dialysis.
|
