ISN and Renal Disaster Relief Task Force reach out to kidney patients in the Philippines
Following the disaster of typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, ISN and the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force (RDRTF) have supported local nephrologists in helping renal patients in the country.
Susan Anonuevo, President of the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) said: “We are mobilizing our team using the society’s resources as well as donations from our members and other healthcare partners. We are however still coordinating with our Department of Health and the Philippine College of Physicians who help us with the transport of some of the supplies.”
PSN have already sent local volunteers composed of nephrologists and nurses who were able to operate the hemodialysis immediately. At this time, more patients are coming in for treatment after it was announced over the local radio and national television that a dialysis facility was already in operation. “Our team also sent word around the community where medical mission activities are being conducted to direct patients needing dialysis,” explained Anonuevo.
PSN is also providing patients with up to a month’s supply of maintenance medications because even the pharmacies in the community have been washed away. “The flow of our operation have been going smoothly so far. The medical teams that are to be dispatched in batches are already scheduled and our supplies sufficient up to the second week of December. Medical personnel and supplies are already prepared in case there is a need to extend our relief activities,” she added.
