WCN 2015 (taking place in Africa for the first time) is a special event taking place every two years with a high-quality program reflecting how renal science and healthcare must be tailored to the unique and diverse needs of patients and clinicians worldwide. It has an educational mission, gathering kidney doctors and specialists worldwide to exchange information and providing vital guidance and support to advance nephrology around the world.

Special program

The underlying themes of sustainability and diversity are highlighted across an exciting program that should foster many educational and collegial exchanges. Of key importance, the program will feature a mix of cutting edge medical science, notably in plenary lectures, and educational courses that fill the unmet needs of clinicians and patients in many countries around the world.

Accordingly, this meeting will, for the first time at a WCN, provide educational tracks that take place throughout the full Congress. There are French and English Continuing Nephrology Education (CNE) sessions, reflecting the diversity of Africa and making new knowledge and scientific advances more easily accessible. The program also features translational (“bench-to-bedside”) medicine, focusing on innovative and novel medical progress for major disorders that affect many people in Africa and emerging countries, for example hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, polluted water-related disorders and infectious diseases, such as HIV and Ebola virus infections.

This congress is the first WCN to date with so many pediatric themes.  Particular emphasis is being placed on issues common to adult and pediatric patients with kidney diseases, and on disorders of pregnancy, the perinatal period and beyond, many of which are induced by insufficient access to primary care and the effect of insufficient nutrition and infection during gestation.

The program also features for the first time at a WCN, a full-day symposium and daily sessions in the CNE track for Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), recognizing the crucial role of this important group of first-line care givers in Africa and other emerging countries.
