Beyond his scholarly accomplishments, John Harrington made a rich contribution to educating the international kidney community as one of the founding editors of the Nephrology Forum in Kidney International (KI), serving uninterruptedly for all 28 years of the feature’s life.

John Tolan Harrington, Dean Emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, died on October 31, 2017. His passing is a reminder of the value of his expertise and experience in strengthening Kidney International’s readership popularity.

In 1978, Cohen, Harrington, and Kassirer approached Kidney International editor Roscoe Robinson with the idea for Nephrology Forum, a monthly feature that brought a rigorous pathophysiologic orientation to a clinical problem in nephrology.

Remaining true to the international character of the journal, the Forum drew its principal discussants from over 35 countries. It enjoyed an extraordinary run of 28 years, and in the process provided expert information and perspective to generations of nephrologists.
