Kidney International Reports Celebrates Five Years of Presenting Outstanding Research in Nephrology

KIR The Kidney International Reports's (KIR) Jai Radhakrishnan, editor-in-chief, Sumit Mohan, deputy editor, and Radha McLean, executive editor, highlight the journal's significant role in disseminating valuable research in nephrology, having published over 1,000 articles since its launch in 2016.
The article, 5 Years (And Counting) of Expanding Access to Kidney Disease Research, marking the fifth anniversary of the journal, presents its strengths and continuing growth, notably its successful open-access policy and the receipt of a first impact factor, 3.374, issued in 2020.

KIR expanded its editorial team in 2021 in line with a marked increase in submissions. In addition, “Regional Reports” have been added to the journal's repertoire, and "Research Letter" publications extended to include condensed format studies.

Unsurprisingly, KIR has published dozens of research articles, clinical trials, systematic reviews, and commentaries on the epidemiology and treatment of COVID patients with AKI and ESRD.

KIR continues to analyze changing readership patterns and innovate solutions to accommodate their needs, particularly within the social media landscape. It is dedicated to continuing to pioneer to provide the highest standards of research in kidney conditions and care.

Senegal to Inaugurate Largest Dialysis Center in Western Africa

spotlight-session

The ISN is pleased to share that Senegal will soon have the largest dialysis unit in Western Africa. The ISN Dialysis Working Group chair, Abdou Niang, recently presented the project to Senegal’s President, Macky Sall.

This brand-new unit will be part of the four-story Dalal Jamm Hospital in Dakar. This major referral hospital receives patients who are unable to access treatment elsewhere in the country.

Viviane Calice-Silva, from Brazil, was awarded an ISN Clinical Research Grant in 2014. This grant allowed her to investigate the use of salivary urea nitrogen (SUN) dipsticks for acute kidney injury detection in areas with low diagnostic resources.

Her study was later replicated in Africa, and different steps of the project have been published in separate papers. She continues to work alongside a team in Africa on various research projects. She says, "SUN strips are still under study, and we believe their application in special settings can improve AKI detection."

Viviane is one of the hundreds of ISN members dedicating time and energy to advancing worldwide kidney health, together. Read more inspiring accounts in the ISN@Work Gallery on the WCN'21 platform until May 31, 2021.

Looking to the Future: New YNC Leadership Shares Current Projects

Young-Nephrologists

YNC Chair Marina Wainstein and Deputy Chair Sabine Karam

The Young Nephrologists Committee (YNC) was launched in 2007 to understand and evaluate the needs of young nephrologists worldwide to develop opportunities for them within the ISN.

In the year ahead, we will explore the creation of a YN forum on the ISN website, hosted and moderated by the YNC, to discuss general topics and clinical dilemmas of current concern. In response to the increasing interest from YNs to join and engage with the committee, we plan to introduce a broader network to harness this enthusiasm.

The future looks bright, with many endeavors already established, such as the ELP program, grants for scientific writing, and continuous renal replacement therapy courses, or underway, such as contributing to developing the ISN mentorship program and stronger ties with Kidney International. We look forward to more capacity building and a greater contribution from the YNs toward ISN's mission and vision to advance kidney health worldwide-together.

Explore and Use the ISN Framework for Developing Dialysis Programs in Low-resource Settings

framework

The "ISN Framework for Developing Dialysis Programs in Low-resource Settings" outlines the requirements and operational considerations for setting up or expanding dialysis programs and developing sustainable strategies to treat patients with kidney failure.

The framework, developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in ISN's official capacity as a WHO non-state actor, reflects a commitment to support health systems worldwide to develop resource-sensitive solutions to care for kidney disease patients in low-resource settings.

Read more on this initiative in "Bringing equity in access to quality dialysis," published in The Lancet.

Kidney Disorders as Serious Adverse Drug Reactions of Remdesivir in Covid-19: A Retrospective Case-noncase Study

KI-Editorial

Remdesivir is a novel adenosine-like nucleotide analogue, representing the first drug approved for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), albeit an uncertain clinical relevance. In clinical trials and case series, acute kidney injury (AKI), including renal replacement, has been frequently reported.

Although causality is debatable, kidney injuries, especially proximal tubular epithelial cell necrosis, have also been observed in animal studies during remdesivir development.

Results demonstrate an increased reporting of kidney disorders using remdesivir compared with the use of chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, dexamethasone, sarilumab, or tocilizumab.
