Every two years, at the occasion of the World Congress of Nephrology, the ISN Fellowship Committee recognizes a selection of recent and current ISN Fellows for their ongoing achievements.

The ISN is pleased to announce three winners of the ISN Fellowship Awards 2021.

 The ISN Fellowship Committee selected these winners based on the abstract accepted at WCN’21 and the Fellows’ role in the research project:

First prize: Abduzhappar Gaipov (Kazakhstan) – “Epidemiology of Kidney Transplants in Kazakhstan: Data from Unified National Electronic Health System 2014-2018.”

Dr. Gaipov was awarded a Fellowship in 2017. He trained in clinical and epidemiological research methodology under mentorship from Prof. Csaba P. Kovesdy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, USA.

His ISN fellowship project, “Chronic kidney disease epidemiology and research methodology,” helped him initiate similar projects since returning home. He comments, “I hope the development of modern renal care and a national renal registry database can resolve problems of early detection of CKD patients and predict the risk factors of mortality.”

Second prize: Farah Gul Khan (Pakistan) – “Etiology, Outcome, and Factors Associated with Increased In-patient Mortality in Acute Kidney Injury; a Prospective Cohort Study.”

Dr. Khan was awarded a Fellowship in 2019. She trained in transplantation under mentorship from Prof. Muhammad Yaqoob at the Barts Health NHS Trust in London, UK. Dr. Khan aims to continuously develop her skills to improve the standard of care provided to patients with kidney diseases. She describes her work ethic with the quote, “If you do the work, you get rewarded. There are no shortcuts in life.”

Third prize: Privilage Makanda-Charambira (Zimbabwe) – “Tuberculosis in Paediatric Kidney Transplant Recipients – a Single Centre Experience.”

Dr. Makanda-Charambira was awarded a Fellowship in 2019 and is currently training in pediatric nephrology under mentorship from Prof. Mignon McCulloch and Dr. Peter Nourse at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Dr. Makanda-Charambira dedicates time to research to help children in low-income settings and aspires to establish a pediatric renal unit in Zimbabwe. She states, “I envision an Africa where every child with kidney disease has access to the best care.”

The ISN Fellowship Award is open to ISN Fellows currently in training or who finished their training within the last five years and whose abstract was accepted at WCN.

These awards are sponsored by the Japanese Society of Nephrology (JSN). The ISN thanks JSN for its support in recognizing these Fellows for their achievements in nephrology research.
