Support the ISN-Schrier fellowship fund

Prof. Schrier served in ISN leadership for more than twenty years. He was elected to the ISN Council in 1978. From 1981 – 1991, he served as Treasurer. He then led ISN as President-Elect in 1991, up until he was announced as ISN President from 1995 to 1997. Prof. Schrier remained an active supporter until his passing in January 2021.

In 1986, Prof. Schrier became the first chair of the ISN Fellowship Committee. He further continued his commitment to the Fellowship program by hosting fourteen ISN Fellows (from China, Croatia, India, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine) at the University of Colorado between 1989 and 2013. In 1993, he proposed that ISN establish the ISN Commission on Global Advancement of Nephrology (COMGAN) to coordinate ISN’s activities in the developing world.

In 2006, Prof. Schrier and his wife, Barbara L. Schrier, generously provided a seed endowment to create a fund for global development in nephrology, the ISN-Schrier Fund, saying at the time:

“The outreach programs of the ISN to the less fortunate parts of the world are truly inspirational. Without more equalization throughout the world in all aspects of life, not just economical, the peace that everyone yearns for will never become a reality.” – Robert W. Schrier

Their vision was shared and quickly supported with generous donations from Prof. Schrier’s family, the Salmasi family, and Otsuka and Amgen. Since 2006, 48 fellowships bearing their names have been awarded to outstanding candidates by the ISN Fellowship Committee.

In memory of Professor Robert Schrier and to continue his legacy of supporting the ISN, the Schrier family has committed to a further gift of $100,000 to the ISN-Schrier Family Fellowship Fund and sent the following note:

“When our father asked us to help endow the ISN-Schrier Fund in 2006, we were excited to support him and trusted his vision. We’d like to further honor his work and memory as that investment has helped fund more than 48 Fellows. We can think of no better way to do that than to support future ISN Fellows. Dad often quoted George Bernard Shaw: You see things, and you say ‘why?’ But I dream of things that never were and say ‘why not?’. It is a privilege for our family to honor his dream.”

To honor and sustain Robert W. Schrier’s commitment to training fellows, ISN invites donations to the ISN-Schrier Fellowship fund, which will provide training to physicians from a low-resource country with the ultimate goal of improving the standards of care in the Fellow’s home country upon their return and to help them become a leader in their field.
